When summer comes with scorching heat, your best relief is the air conditioner in your room. But what if you switch it on, only to find your AC having trouble functioning properly, or worst it’s stopped working at all. Among the myriad of reasons for this to happen, the frozen evaporator coil is a major one.

The evaporator coil consists of refrigerant flowing inside and outside constantly, in a contained loop. The compressor moves the refrigerant into the evaporator coil where it removes heat from the air and cools the room. If the evaporator coil freezes, there's ice in the vents which stops the moving of refrigerant properly.

Wondering what else could possibly be the frozen evaporator coil causes? Read further.

Dirty air filter

A very dirty filter prevents the evaporator coil from absorbing the heat from the air. When the dust and dirt spread all around, it blocks the airflow completely. This eventually leads the evaporator coil to freeze down.

Solution: You can wash the filter yourself since it's a very basic task. Take a small amount of normal laundry detergent and mix it in a bucket full of clean water. Submerge the filter in the water and aggravate the dirt properly. Swirl the filter around before rinsing it under running water.

Alternatively, get an AC cleaning service from a reliable service provider. Normal servicing or jet service, an expert will do the job much efficiently than you. Plus, it will avoid any further damage that may happen while you do the cleaning yourself.

Lack of Airflow

The evaporator coil functions after it absorbs the heat from the air. If there is not enough heat to absorb, the evaporator coils freeze. Low airflow in the AC can cause problems in the blower fan, damage the ductwork, or lead to an unclean air filter.

Solution: Most airflow problems can be fixed by self. You can clear the filters yourself so that the airflow is not obstructed. In case it doesn't work for you, you can call an experienced AC technician to ensure smooth airflow via vents.

Dirty Evaporator Coils

Dirt in the evaporator coil can obstruct the heat exchange progress. This avoids the absorption of heat from air present in the room which slows the condensation process leading to a frozen evaporator coil.

Solution: Get your AC serviced by a professional to ensure the evaporator coil remains clean and the AC functions properly.

Low Amount of Refrigerant

Another reason for frozen evaporator coils in AC less refrigerant in the unit. Although refrigerant is contained in a closed-loop line, there may be quantity loss due to any leakage or other damage in the pipe. In case of low refrigerant, your AC unit starts to overwork. This may lead to damage to the evaporator coil.

Solution: If you observe this issue in your AC, it’s better to call a professional who can fix the underlying refrigerant leaks properly. Doing it yourself may cause further damage, as the job requires special technical knowledge.

Low Outdoor Temperature

If the air temperature in your room is already low, the air conditioner evaporator coil can freeze. This may happen in case AC runs excessively during the night. The coil absorbs the hot air outside, turns it into a cold one that then circulates in the room. But the lack of heat in the air can lead to frozen coils.

Solution: First of all check the thermostat for any problems. If the temperature drops during the night, avoid using the air conditioner. Do not set your thermostat at a very low temperature.

Clogging in Drainpipe

Condensation on evaporator coils is a natural phenomenon that makes the coil function. If there is clogging in the drainpipe, a lot of condensation may occur, leading to the freezing of evaporation coils.

Solution: Unclog the drainpipe by calling the AC technician.

Unclean coils

With time, the evaporator coils get dirty with dust and grime which prevents the airflow in the coils leading to improper movement of heat. This means that the air conditioner coils can freeze over. This is why cleaning the evaporator coil is essential.

Solution: Yearly service of your air conditioner can avoid the coils from getting dirty.
